The Revolution was profoundly disruptive to women’s lives in Georgia, though documentary evidence of their experiences is sparse. Women managed farms and households alone as husbands, brothers, and sons went to fight—often never returning—and endured the violence and privation of backcountry warfare. Abigail Minis of Savannah left a letter seeking reimbursement for provisions she had supplied to American troops in 1779, a small but telling record of women’s material contributions to the Patriot cause. Nancy Hart became Georgia’s most celebrated female Revolutionary—a fierce frontierswoman whose patriotic exploits, though partly legendary by the time they were recorded, entered the standard school curriculum and embodied the archetype of Georgia’s patriotic womanhood. For the vast majority of women, the Revolution was simply a matter of holding families and households together through an enormously disruptive conflict, without the recognition, rights, or formal political standing that the Declaration’s language might have implied.
